Actresses tend to wear the most extravagant gowns to the Oscars. And the 2010 Oscars is no different, where many of the gowns came straight off the Paris Couture shows this year. Here is the Culturistas rundown of which gowns worked and which didn't.

Zoe Saldana and her stylist took a very literal approach with this Givenchy couture gown. Zoe even wears the shoes pictured on the runway model. She gets bonus points for styling her hair in an updo with much softer makeup than the runway show, letting the gown speak for itself. Zoe says on her gown, “It’s yards and yards of fabric. It’s the dress that the moment my stylist and I saw it we immediately fell in love with it. It fits everything I’ve been through leading up to tonight and my whole experience in Avatar. It embodies everything that I’ve been through. It’s big and it’s colourful and shimmery. That’s exactly what Avatar did.”

Jennifer Lopez wore the Armani Prive couture gown to the 2010 Oscars. While the color is nice ethereal color and her and her stylist made some changes in the bodice of the gown to be more flattering, it just doesn't work. The problem with so much added volume is that it adds volume to your shape as well.

Charlize Theron wore a Dior couture gown to this years Oscars. Positives: Nice color change (there wasn't that much color on the red carpet) and it was probably right to take off the bow (though Charlize could have rocked it). Also nice soft hair and make-up. Negatives: Taking off the beading made the bodice stand out way to much which just brought too much attention to the chest. All in all this dress did not work for us.

Sarah Jessica Parker rocked this flowing Chanel Couture gown at the Oscars. Though the silhouette isn't that flattering, she pulls it off well. The color of the beading looks like its been changed to a more silver based instead of a gunmetal which really makes the look softer for real life. She also accessorized well which made for a great translation onto the red carpet.

Rachel McAdams was one of our best dressed this year on the Oscars red carpet. She wore this gorgeous flowing Elie Saab gown. And it translated so well onto the red carpet that we think it looks even better in real life! Her soft up-do and beautiful earrings help make this look spot on.

Pe hizo el paseíllo sola con un diseño burdeos de Donna Karan largo y con volumen menos espectacular que el Balmain que lució al recoger la estatuilla en la edición anterior. Optaba al premio a la mejor actriz de reparto por su papel de Carla en «Nine». De ahí que una de las imágenes repetidas ayer hasta la saciedad fue la que mostraba a la pareja en el patio de butacas de la mano mientras sonaba el nombre de su contrincante, Mo'Nique. No se soltaron ni en el «backstage» justo cuando la noche no había hecho más que empezar y las grandes fiestas ya recibían a los primeros invitados. Unas citas a las que asistieron, probablemente, con Pedro Almodóvar, que se dejó ver con pajarita blanca y gafas de sol. La más solicitada de Hollywood es el Baile del Gobernador, a la que asisten nominados y oscarizados. Kathryn Bigelow recibió allí las felicitaciones de sus colegas, como Meryl Streep, Sandra Bullock, que no soltó su primera estatuilla, Keanu Reeves y Sigourney Weaver. Muy concurrida fue también la organizada por «Vanity Fair», debido al número de estrellas por metro cuadrado. Es curioso observar cómo las actrices y celebridades internacionales se visten de gala para visitar al hombrecillo desnudo más deseado del cine. La alfombra roja de los Oscar se extendió para recibir las propuestas que marcarán tendencia y, entre ellas, cabe destacar la multitud de volantes que inundaron nuestra retina; los vimos en cascadas, lisos, a jirones, cortados al bies, en diagonal, plisados o con clara inspiración española. Llamaron la atención los de Elizabeth Banks en azul porcelana de Versace; los de Vera Farmiga, plisados en frambuesa por Marchesa; y los de Demi Moore, creados por Versace. Aunque, para mí, sin lugar a dudas, el Oscar de la noche fue para los de Zoe Saldana. Me impresionó su estelar aparición con un Givenchy Couture con volantes color púrpura «degradé», una apuesta arriesgada, pero absolutamente impactante. Entre las que optaron por el socorrido tafetán de seda nos encontramos a Kristen Stewart, con un impresionante vestido azul petróleo, y Penélope Cruz, con un Donna Karan drapeado en diagonal de color burdeos y joyas de Chopard. Los tonos pastel aparecieron de la mano de Kate Winslet, clásica y fiel a Yves Saint Laurent. Jennifer López no estuvo muy acertada con el color rosa helado iridiscente de abertura frontal y una reveladora cascada de media luna que descendía desde el bustier, todo bordado por Armani con cristales de Swarovski. Sarah Jessica Parker deslumbró con su magnífico Chanel en raso amarillo, Charlize Theron acudió con un Dior Couture en dos tonos de rosa que fue muy criticado por una aparente mala confección de las costuras. La candidata a mejor actriz de reparto, Anna Kendrick, llegó radiante con un vestido de Elie Saab en color maquillaje, y Diane Kruger decepcionó con un voluminoso recorte de pétalos alrededor de las caderas de Chanel. El momento princesa lo vivimos con Amanda Seyfried y su Armani Privé montado sobre un bustier con incrustaciones de cristal que acentuaban el efecto luminoso. Optaron por el oro Cameron Diaz, con un Oscar de la Renta en tul champagne, y Sandra Bullock, que lució una creación de Marchesa en oro líquido con incrustaciones sobre gasa transparente. Y se decidió por el negro Carey Mulligan, con un impresionante corpiño con incrustaciones de maxicristales en cascadas sobre una particular falda de capa firmada por Prada. En definitiva, vestidos grandiosos y joyas espectaculares que deslumbraron en la acertada alfombra roja, sobre la que cualquier color favorece. Disfruté con la gala y con la lejana esperanza de que algún día la insólita alfombra verde de nuestros queridos Goya cambie por uno de los 256 millones de tonos de rojo que existen, tales como el granate, burdeos, borgoña, carmín, magenta... Cualquiera de ellos evitaría que nuestras actrices descarten muchos colores que no fotografían nada bien cerca de tan disparatado y poco acertado verde.

Whether there were too many details or too little fabric, we've narrowed things down to five. Rachel McAdams in her Elie Saab gown is currently your favorite of the evening, but tell us what you think - who was the worst dressed of Oscars night?

There's a rumor that Sean Penn was thrown out of the Governor's Ball last night for punching Greg Shapiro, a Hurt Locker producer reportedly dating Robin Wright. Though there are numerous sources, they can't seem to get their stories straight:

One claims, "Academy officials...said he was banned from the Ball." However, a rep for the Academy says, "Sean Penn chose not to attend the Governors Ball." [E!]
TMZ's sources agree that Sean Penn couldn't have been kicked out of the Governors Ball because he was never there in the first place. Penn and Greg Shapiro did run into each other backstage at the Oscars, but no one saw this alleged fight. An "insider" says, "I didn't see it happen ... something could've happened, but if it did, it was minor and only lasted a second." [TMZ]
A source says at Elton John's Oscars party, "Madonna walked in with her manager Guy Oseary and her entourage and ordered a Belvedere vodka. It was left to one rather nervous waiter to tell her only Grey Goose was available and when he did all hell broke loose. Madonna was dropping F-bombs like they were going out of fashion. Fortunately Guy was able to calm her down. But she sulked about the vodka and ordered a non-alcoholic virgin mojito instead. She was clearly up for a drink, but wasn't prepared to compromise on her vodka choice." [The Mirror]
Ryan O'Neal said of Farrah Fawcett being left out of the Oscars' "In Memorium" segment, "It was a terrible decision and very hurtful.. Farrah was a member of the Academy for over 40 years and we could not believe she did not get a mention." [Radar]

5. Barbra Streisand - I love Babs but her dress was a lace overload! I thought I was at the flea market in Istanbul.

"So, who's your BEST dressed celeb?" is a question raised by a very dear friend after any red carpet event. She always beats me to it. And this morning wasn't any different. The first thing she said to me was: "I thought the recession was over!!", referring to how celebs played it safe with their fashion picks. If you're a celeb who can get any gown you wish for and make a designer's dream come true by gracing the red carpet in his/her own creation then seize this once in a life time opportunity and go for something more extravagant and daring. Not lady gaga extravagant, but more refined couture-like pieces like Armani Privé or Marchesa, Anyways, here's my favorite Oscar's best dressed celebs:

Jennifer Lopez in Armani Privé, I have to admit though she looked fabulous from this angel, there was something not quite right about the other
Miley Cyrus in Jenny Packham, a flattering age approperiate gown
Victoria Beckham, in her own label, saved by the pixel effect which made the gown more interesting

The disappointments? SJP, Diane Kruger, and Charlize Theron (major disappointment!).

Taylor Lautner was solo for a bit but spent much of his evening with Twilight saga costar Kristen Stewart, who was spotted sneaking out barefoot at the end of her night. Kate Bosworth and Alexander Skarsgard are still playing the separate arrivals game, and Natalie Portman didn't bring her rumored ballet-dancing boyfriend.

Diane Kruger changed out of her controversial Chanel number and into something beautiful and bright, also upgrading her look by reuniting with Joshua Jackson, who we missed at the Oscars. With one Glee girl holding down the fort at Elton, Dianna Agron looked perfectly poised on her way into VF. Lenny Kravitz brought his daughter Zoe out late while he was simultaneously making a funny appearance on Jimmy Kimmel's Handsome Men's Club skit along with Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Josh Hartnett, and many other good-looking guys.

You might have noticed last night that there were very few D-list actors and actresses peppering the front-most rows at the Academy Awards, and that the real stars took front and center. Happily, you have Paris Fashion Week to thanks for the absence of random people like Lindsay Lohan and P. Diddy, who were too busy schmoozing in the fashion show front rows than taking up valuable aisle seats at the Oscars.

Still, there is one girl who expertly makes the jetsetting jump from Paris Fashion Week to the Academy Awards in LA, and that's Charlize Theron. The South African beauty is one of the current faces of fashion house Christian Dior and thus was practically required to show up at the fashion show in Paris only a few days ago, and then follow it up with a red carpet and presenting appearance at the Oscars in Los Angeles donning a Dior dress (which subsequently landed her on the worst dressed lists).

&video;&security; Piers Morgan, arbitrator of all things "sexy and feminine," went on the Today Show this morning to spout things like "more women on the red carpet should think about men." And that's just the beginning.

Morgan appeared alongside Today style editor Bobbie Thomas and they couldn't have picked two more different guests. While Thomas has mostly positive things to say about the fashions, Morgan seems to take a particular pleasure in pointing out physical flaws and making stay in the kitchen-style jokes. Right off the bat, the two disagree about Sandra Bullock, who Morgan says isn't "a great natural beauty compared to the others." When Thomas steps in to defend her Bullock, Morgan shuts her down, saying "Well, I'm the fashion expert around here." Cue uncomfortable laughter.

For the next several minutes, Morgan makes it clear that being a "fashion expert" is somehow synonymous with "jackass." He bemoans Charlize Theron's dress on the grounds that it is an example of "women dressing for women." Carey Mulligan is the "perfect woman" because of the "kitchen utensils" covering her Prada dress. The entire segment is kind of uncomfortable to watch, as the guests clash and host Meredith Vieira does minimal damage control.

Morgan's criticism exemplifies two of the biggest problems of red carpet commentary: mean-spirited bitchiness combined with open sexism. Mocking celebrities has become something of a national pastime, but there is a point where the all-in-good-fun critique veers into dangerous territory. For lack of a better word, Morgan's brand of commentary is purely bitchy. There is nothing fun about his appearance; he isn't trying to be particularly quick or witty. He is little more than a poor man's Simon Cowell, but instead of doling out harsh truths, he plays on stale jokes and outdated stereotypes. In lieu of insight, Morgan panders to our basest impulses. And it seems that far too much of the red carpet talk has fallen into this pattern of alternating between vicious take-downs and praise made fainter by the smattering of backhanded compliments. I'm not exactly a believer in the if you cant say anything nice school of thought, because being truly and consistently nice can get rather boring. But maybe "fashion experts" like Morgan should follow this modified rule, borrowed from our own commenting policies: If your statement is neither complimentary, insightful, or redeemed by the sheer brilliance of your wit, maybe you should keep it to yourself.

The Cut

Both Times fashion critic Horyn and Vogue editor André Leon Talley have previously bemoaned red-carpet fashion this awards season. Horyn wondered if the good designers were avoiding loaning dresses, while Talley compared more than one actress's red-carpet look to food — and no woman would relish a "roadside-diner peach melba" comparison. However, the two seem more or less pleased overall with what they saw last night. Horyn, who watched from Paris, found the gown parade "pretty funny":

Here were all these gorgeous women with great bodies — I mean, we constantly hear about their workout routines, diets, etc. — and most of them were awash in ruffles and soupy drapery.

Horyn liked Sandra Bullock's Marchesa number, a simpler silhouette than many, but writes that "Sarah Jessica Parker topped it all" in Chanel Haute Couture. Though it's unclear if she means that in a good or bad way:

Ms. Parker is a beautiful woman, but the hairdo (and the Chanel column with breastplate) wore her on this occasion.

As did, in our opinion, her severe black eyeliner. Talley also wasn't a fan of Parker's "heavy chignon that looked like it was throwing off her carriage," though he loved the Chanel dress. He also loved Sandra Bullock's entire look — dress, hair, and makeup — noting that she "finally got the message!" But Talley's favorite dress of the night was Jennifer Lopez's Armani Privé, which was nice but looked like it had a vagina flapping off of it.

Talley was less thrilled with Maggie Gyllenhall's Dries Van Noten. Of Charlize Theron's Dior, he only writes that the dress "was without question making a statement," which had something to do with, oh, hmmm ... her bosom. Finally, he was mixed on Zoe Saldana's fashion-savvy choice — brand-new Givenchy couture — which is shaping up to be one of the most controversial of the night.

Zoe Saldana’s Givenchy Haute Couture looked marvelous, but the ombré poodle-like cancan dancer skirt was overkill — too much dress for her.

But going into it, did anyone expect Zoe Saldana to be the name on everyone's lips the next day? In other news, Carey Mulligan wore Prada.

Enjoying a full night of red carpet action, Charlize Theron headed from the Academy Awards ceremony to the 2010 Vanity Fair Oscar Party in West Hollywood last night (March 7).

The South African beauty struck a few poses upon arrival, clad in a much-criticized specially designed John Galliano for Dior frock.

Bashing the newly single actress' look, EOnline critics sniped, "Almost every year somebody wears something off-the-wall crazy to the Oscars, and this year the unfortunate honor goes to Charlize Theron. Yep, those are her lady lumps wrapped in lilac rosettes, courtesy of Dior Haute Couture. This one's going down in the history books along with the swan dresses and pirate costumes."

Nonetheless, Miss Theron, 34, disagreed with the fashion police's comments, telling Us magazine, "I just loved this dress!"

The Oscars unfolded pretty much as everyone expected (okay, maybe not in the best foreign language film category), which leaves everyone to talk about the fashion. E! will be airings its Fashion Police show tonight at 10 p.m., but if you wanted a preview of the snark, Joan Rivers was tweeting things like "The red carpet arrivals have begun. Watch Mariah Carey!!! OMG!! She spent 75.00 for a Brazilian wax and dying to show it off!" "Tina Fey looks like she's going to a Hadassah fundraiser" and "Miley Cyrus and her mother offend white trash."

The NY Times' Ruth La Ferla seemed upset about Ryan Seacrest, who "was either too reverent or too proud to ask the usual leading question: 'Who are you wearing?' Viewers had to turn to the TV Guide Channel to find out that Mo’Nique’s dress was by Tom and Linda Platt, her couturiers for at least a decade."

La Ferla also liked Meryl Streep's white dress (though Gawker called it a bathrobe), but wondered, "Who made it? Maybe Mr. Seacrest will ask next year." Charlize Theron is making all the worst dressed lists this morning and I'm not sure why. A few hating hos have called Charlize's "Janet Jackson getting titty cupped" dress tasteless, tacky and trampy. Yeah exactly, point me to the problem, because most of us would nibble on Jon Gosselin's crotch sprout to be called tasteless, tacky and trampy. That's a life goal.

If I still haven't convinced you, let me put it this way: The top of Charlize's dress looks like two labia flowers suckling on her chichi nipples. Sold, right?

The 2010 Oscars are now but a memory - that's 3 1/2 hours of my life I'm never getting back! I sat through every second of it mostly for the fashion of course, well and to drool over George Clooney! I didn't see a lot to love, saw much that made me say "meh" and lots more that made me wonder if many of the Hollywood stylists suddenly all went blind... All this and neither Cher nor Bjork were even in attendance!

Instead, I'll kick off with the dress I've been thinking about the most: Zoe Saldana's crystal-and-purple number. This Givenchy dress (from the Paris shows, apparently) echoed one of the main styles of the night: hard-structured metallic top matched with a waterfall-like bottom. I went back and forth on Saldana's version and ultimately decided it was awful. I think it's because that bottom reminded me of those cabbagelike flowers they plant around Washington in the winter.
