Two points of frustration with what's an otherwise short, pleasant and effective appearance by Buffalo Sabres goalie and Team USA Winter Olympic MVP Ryan Miller (notes) on "The Today Show" on Monday morning.

The first is when host Matt Lauer mentions the ovation Miller received from the fans in Pittsburgh, but doesn't follow through with real significance of the moment: That Miller was given a more enthusiastic reception than the player who beat him for the gold medal in overtime, in said player's home arena.

The second, obviously, is that it's Matt Lauer doing the interview rather than Kathy Lee Gifford, a box of wine and a torch song about America.

Just when you think Karl Rove couldn't get any douchier, he goes and raises the bar. In a recent Today Show interview with Matt Lauer to promote Rove's new book, the former presidential adviser claims that he had no clue his father was gay. Maybe the 37 cock piercings made of solid gold could have given pause, but if not, Karl was the only one.

Louis Rove moved to Palm Springs and befriended other retired gay men. He drank and socialized at the Rainbow Cactus and the Martini Burger and became part of a group of gay men who referred to themselves as "The Old Farts Club." According to his close friend of many years, retired insurance executive Joseph Koons, Louis Rove was one of the best people he knew and that both Louis and his son Karl were comfortable with the father's sexual orientation.

The zealousness with which Rove and [outed former RNC Chairman Ken] Mehlman pursue an anti-gay agenda for political utility suggests more than just an ambition to win elections. Students of Freud might be able to artfully deconstruct their behavior but even lay analysts can see a bit of repression and self-loathing at work. Maybe Rove has a desire to get back at his father for leaving his mother when he "chose" to be gay.

Rove left his father's funeral and promptly put in place a plan for the Republicans to win massive majorities by fueling anti-gay sentiments. He was the mastermind behind the push for a federal anti-marriage amendment.

NBC's Matt Lauer will have a two-part exclusive next week with Karl Rove, former senior adviser to President George W. Bush and a Fox News contributor. "Today" has a taped segment Monday and Rove will be in studio Tuesday for a live interview. Rove is promoting his new book "Courage and Consequence," and, according to the NBC release, "Rove tells Lauer it is now his turn to set the record straight." Full release after the jump.

TV Guide is reporting that 'Today' co-host Meredith Vieira has signed a new deal with NBC that keeps her in the co-anchor seat alongside Matt Lauer until the end of 2011.

The fact that Vieira re-upped with 'Today' isn't surprising (she has settled in quite nicely over there), though it is a little surprising that she only signed on for one more year. I don't know what type of contract Lauer has with the show (though The New York Times says his last contract extension in 2006 was for five years), or Robin Roberts at ABC or Harry Smith at CBS, but I would have thought that the network would want to lock Vieira in with a multi-year deal. So the fact that Vieira is staying with 'Today' isn't news, but I think the length of her contract might be.

Maybe she just wants to take it year by year and see how things go.

Meredith Vieira just extended her contract as a host of the Today Show another year.

Vieira joined "Today" four years ago after Katie Couric's exit. Her five-year contract was set to expire in November, the New York Times reports.

Vieira's decision to stay - even for just one year - solidifies Today's reign as the No. 1 network morning show and as one of NBC's top programs. In a post-late night mess, this is good news for NBC.

Today has been the top rated morning news program for more than 14 years, which is the longest current streak for any daytime broadcast show, according to MediaBistro . In an effort to catch up, ABC's Good Morning America and CBS' The Early Show will once again flaunt new hosts New York Times reports.

Vieira's co-host, Matt Lauer, will remain under contract until 2011.

Lars Carlberg and Dan Melia, the two fine gentlemen of Mosel Wine Merchant, are in town this week with a few of the growers they represent. They hosted a dinner last night at Prune in the East Village, and I was lucky enough to attend.
I know so tremendously little about German Riesling that it simply wouldn't be proper for me to try to discuss the wines in a meaningful way - I have no context to share with you, nothing more to say about them than how delicious they are. And they are very delicious.

Instead, I can tell you a few things about Lars and Dan, and the work they're doing. Mosel WIne Merchant is not a large company. It's Lars and Dan - that's it. They're a couple of smart, well-educated, well-traveled, genuinely kind fellows who love wine, particularly Mosel Riesling. They could be doing many things that would probably be far more lucrative, but they run this little company together, bringing naturally made, small production Mosel Riesling to the US and other markets. They really believe in these wines, and it's easy to understand why after drinking them with dinner.

Lars grew up partly in Germany and partly in the US - he lives in Germany now and runs all of Mosel Wine Merchant's European operations. Dan managed Prune for 8 years and left to travel in Germany. He's completely fluent in German - "his German is better than mine now," says Lars. Dan is the guy who schleps the wines all over NYC and the rest of the country, making sure that we have the chance to buy them in retail shops.

I sat next to Mattias Knebel at dinner. As he poured the first of his wines, the absolutely delicious 2008 Mosel Riesling von den Terrassen trocken, $20, I told him how much I enjoy his most basic wine, the humble 2008 Mosel Riesling trocken, $14. Matthias turned to me and smiled and said "I love making that wine. It's from our estate grapes, spontaneous fermentation, I make it the same way I make all my wines. We make no money on it at all, but I love it." The $14 Riesling Trocken is excellent wine, absolutely of its place, and should be part of everyone's under $15 wine repertoire. But the von den Terrassen is a serious step up for a few dollars more, with an expansive nose of ripe fruit and rock, and an ultra-clean palate that continued to grow even as we finished the bottle. It was perfect with seared monkfish liver finished in lemon and soy.

Matthias Knebel

The 2007's were lovely and interesting wines, but might now be entering a shutdown phase. The 2008's were showing beautifully, ripe but controlled, pure and elegant, and with a great balance of fruit and mineral. I loved drinking Knebel's 2008 Röttgen trocken next to his 2008 Uhlen trocken, the more muscular and concentrated Röttgen working perfectly with marrow bones and rock salt, while the wipsy and graceful Uhlen was delicious with a Parmesan omelet. I don't know how much those wines cost, but I would eagerly welcome both of them into my cellar. They drink so well now that it seems a shame to age them for 20 years, which Lars assures me is a great thing to do with these wines.

Lauer's Rieslings were also delicious. They seemed to me to be more ethereal and less concentrated than Knebel's wines. There was a 2005 Lauer Kern with a mature and mellow nose that initially showed some peach and floral elements, but after 15 minutes in the glass, had morphed into liquid slate. There were two sparkling wines by Lauer that I thought were great. It's not often than inexpensive sparkling wines show textural finesse and elegance, and these wines were both wonderfully textured. The current release was lovely, with a good balance of fruit and mineral character, but the 1994 Sekt Reserve was for me, one of the wines of the night. Disgorged in December (although the label says March), it was fresh and lively. Changing constantly in the glass, it was about the bitterness of the pit and the saltiness of rocks, with this great lacy texture. I was sorry to see it go.

Lars, Dan, and the growers are in NYC this week sharing their wines and stories at places like Chambers Street Wines, Uva, and Crush. These are good people doing good things, and their wines taste great and are reasonably priced. If you can make it to one of these tastings, you really should.

As my epic Olympic journey draws to a close, I feel like some sort of punctuation mark is in order.

And it is a big ol' exclamation mark!!!

I had the time of my life taking part in the Office Winter Games Contest and these are just a few of the many reasons:

1) Hanging out with Olympic speed skating legend Bonnie Blair . She is every bit as genuine, spirited, and delightful as she seems on camera. My fondest memory is when we were reprimanded for being too loud.Talk about a kindred spirit.

2) Representing Microsoft Office 2010 . At various points in the trip, most technology failed me. I.e. I couldn't find reliable Wi-Fi, had phone problems in a foreign country etc. Some days, the only thing that saved me was being able to crank out a draft in Word and directly upload it to my blog (a new 2010 feature) whenever I found a connection. Kudos to Microsoft Office 2010 for being so social-media friendly and a delight to promote.

3) Meeting "The Great One" Wayne Gretzky .

And greatly putting my foot in my mouth.

4) Seeing my son's namesake Bode Miller win his first medal—a bronze—in the downhill.

And then racing a mile in my clogs to meet Bode in person at a press conference, all for naught.

5) Having the Today show's Matt Lauer steal my moment in the spotlight. I later promoted my blog post about it on Twitter and the Today show commented how funny it was and retweeted it to their 582,714 followers.

Which is just two more followers than me.

6) Interviewing. A few of the people I interviewed: six-time gold medalist Bonnie Blair , gold medal aerialist Nikki Stone , CEO of the United States Bobsled & Skeleton Federation Darrin Steele , Director of Media Services Bob Condron , USOC's Associate Director of Food and Nutrition Services Terri Moreman, and so many more.

7) Being interviewed. It was also fun to have the tables turned and receive some media placements of my own. With Microsoft Office's ace publicity team, I was featured on the front page of CNN Tech , Denver Post , Arvada Press , Mormon Times , the Seattle Post Intelligencer , the Wall Street Journal's Market Watch , LDS Living , CNet, Fox 31, Channel 2, and I had multiple call-ins to one of Colorado's top radio stations, KOA radio.

I would add the Today show to this list had Matt Lauer not stolen my moment.

8) The Canadian men's hockey team's dramatic finish. Even though I am proud to live in the United States and cheer for our inspiring athletes, hockey is Canada's game. The gold-medal-win secured Canada's record as the nation with the most gold medals ever during an Olympic Games.

This journey would not have happened if it was not for the countless hours Microsoft Office's team put into it. Special thanks to the United States Olympic Committee for the assistance they provided us. And most importantly, thank you to everyone who voted me there.

Though I was sad to leave Vancouver, I was thrilled to return to a loving family, clean house, birthday streamers the color of the Olympic rings and a belated party.

Of course, reentry into the real world is not completely smooth after having The Time of Your Life. The morning after I returned, my husband Jamie (notorious for taking long showers to soothe his sore back) used all the hot water.

Me: "My shower was COLD this morning!"
Jamie: "After leaving me with the kids for 10 days, you haven't yet earned the right to complain."

You won't hear any complaints from me for a very long time.

Hannah Kearney, who won the first Olympic gold medal for the United States at the Vancouver games this year, wrote exclusively for MTV News about her experiences at the games.

I am a freestyle mogul skier who, on February 13, became the first American to win a gold medal at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. The moment I crossed the finish line in my final run, having just skied the best run of my life, I was filled with joy and satisfaction. That may have been the best part of the Olympics for me. Or maybe the best was my score flashed on the Jumbotron and my bronze medalist teammate tackled me when she realized that I was the newest Olympic champion.

Actually, that moment may have been topped the next night when I walked into a stadium packed with 20,000 people to receive my medal. On television I have watched countless athletes from different countries, sports and Olympics stand proudly at the top of the podium and shed tears. They symbolized the Olympics for me because Olympic medals represent all of the hard work and sacrifices made by the athletes as well as the people who helped them reach the top of their sports. I was prepared to be overwhelmed with emotion when the "Star Spangled Banner" began to play, but it happened long before that.

During staging for the ceremony, I looked up over the curtain and caught a glimpse of people packed onto the third balcony of the stadium to cheer for the previous day's medalists. The number of people was unexpected, and whether it was the surprise of it or my lack of sleep over the previous 35 hours, I almost lost it. I was nervous and excited about being presented to the crowd. My heart was pounding in my chest, much faster than it was when I stood in the start gate at the top of my Olympic run. Hearing the Canadian crowd roar for their silver medalist encouraged my tears. Hearing my own name and the equally supportive cheer was unbelievable. My mother said that I looked the happiest she has ever seen me. I remember thinking, "Be in the moment. You will want to remember this." Luckily, hundreds of photographers and video cameras will help me never forget.

Those same cameras broadcast an emotional and personal few minutes of my life to the world. With that exposure comes judgment. I savored my time on top of the podium by watching the American flag rise up out of the crowd as the anthem played, thinking about how every single second of training I've done was for this minute and how many people played a role in my achievement. Behind me, my teammate placed her hand over her heart and sang along. I have read comments about my lack of these common gestures of respect and patriotism. I did not mean to offend anyone and I am certainly not unpatriotic. I simply did what felt right at the moment, and I guess I will have to get used to judgments if I plan on ever being in the public's eye. This judgment is less harsh than the YouTube video I found titled "Hannah Kearney is an Ogre," because my voice got really low at one point during an interview. It is almost flattering that someone would even bother to take the time to post such a silly video of me. I will learn to handle criticism with grace and avoid taking the comments too personally.

Fortunately, the positive moments grossly outnumber the negative ones. The experience of being an Olympian is one that can never be taken away from you. The 104 pieces of Team USA clothing and swag that we received from Nike and Ralph Lauren upon our arrival in Vancouver, along with an Olympic ring (which I paid good money to upgrade to white gold and diamonds), make excellent mementos. During an orientation following dinner after the uniform collection, I was prompted to write a note to myself. I wrote, "My goal is to win a gold medal. I am ready." I kept this piece of paper in my camera case for the duration of the games. Good thing I achieved my goal, or I would not have been able to afford the ring upgrade!

The Opening Ceremonies were a global celebration of athleticism and performance, unrivaled by anything I have experienced in my entire life. I spent four hours being shuffled from one hallway to another, waiting to walk into the stadium. I was dressed in hiking boots, belted white sweatpants tucked into them and a cashmere/wool turtleneck sweater underneath a down coat. Topped off with a wool hat, I was dressed for an outdoor ceremony in Siberia, not the indoor one in rainy Vancouver. Luckily I had the savvy to put on my Red Sox T-shirt first, so I could strip down and prevent myself from passing out and dehydrating the night before my Olympic competition. This form of torture was all worthwhile when I heard "The United States of America" announced and I walked up the ramp into the stadium to a roar like I have never heard before. Dancers, flashing lights, screams, cheers and a group of U.S. athletes 200-strong signified the start of something that was bigger than me.

I had to leave the ceremony moments after walking in and listening to an athlete-tribute song by Nelly Furtado and Brian Adams in order to get to bed at a decent hour. I watched the rest of the ceremony from our house on the other side of the city, and the fireworks from the back patio. I carried the excitement and feeling of pride to the mogul course the next day. Representing our country in a glorified American flag uniform, in pouring rain, fueled by a playlist of Akon, Britney, Black Eyed Peas, Ke$ha, James Morrison, Tom Petty, Journey and Van Morrison, I won the gold medal and jumpstarted the U.S. medal count. What makes the Olympics so special is that for two weeks, our country can all cheer for the same athletes and teams.

The perks to winning a gold medal have been incredible. I may not have been skiing for TV time or endorsements, but that doesn't mean I won't enjoy them. Hearing from people from all walks of life after the event has been touching. Americans in the South that had never seen skiing were impressed with my performance, and even a sick child at a hospital in my hometown liked my interview. I have more Facebook friend requests than I know what to do with. Some of the media attention has been overwhelming since I have never experienced it on this level as an athlete in an obscure sport. However, I am grateful for the support and attention that has come to me and the sport of mogul skiing.

I have had the opportunity to appear on the "Today" show, "Good Morning America" and MTV. I've met Matt Lauer and Al Roker, Olympics-coverage host Bob Costas, Billy Bush from "Access Hollywood and hockey great Wayne Gretzky. Tom Werner, the chairman of the Boston Red Sox, called to ask me to throw out the ceremonial first pitch during the opening series of 2010 against the Yankees. This is something I have been dreaming about and consider a huge honor. There was even a rumor of Ben & Jerry's honoring me with my own flavor, but it turned out to be just that. I tasted my first sip of Dom Perignon when a generous club owner turned out to be an ex-mogul skier and fan.

I am on my way home to Vermont from Vancouver, where surely the perks and attention will die down eventually. I am scheduled to spend my birthday in a parade that will visit the local schools so I can share my excitement and medal with the community that has played an important role in my development as an elite athlete. It sounds much more exciting than three years ago when I spent my 21st birthday on crutches as I recovered from knee surgery that ended my ski season and changed my life. This gold medal experience and success will also undoubtedly change my life — let's just hope it doesn't change me.

Stepping out for a promotional appearance, Robert Pattinson was spotted paying a visit to the “Today” show this morning (March 1).

The “New Moon” stud looked handsome as he chatted with Matt Lauer about the various aspects of his red hot acting career, including his upcoming film “Remember Me.”

In addition, Mr. Pattinson confessed that though he’s best known for his Edward Cullen role, he’s definitely not sick of the vampire genre.

"I don't have anything particularly against vampire [films]. They're great fun to work on and people really like them -- I could do it for a while longer."

Robert Pattinson and his facial scruff paid a visit to The Today Show this morning in NYC to talk about Remember Me before its release this Friday. He opened up to Matt Lauer about how difficult it's been transitioning from using all the standard answers he'd used while promoting New Moon to thinking of new and clever responses about his most recent film. They did touch on the Twilight series, with Rob saying he'd be happy to work on it for a while longer - wonder if that's because he'd get to spend more time with a certain someone? Matt couldn't help getting in one question about Rob's racy Details spread. Rob joked, "I offered to do a naked photo shoot, and no one wanted to see it. It started off with me naked, but then they're just like, 'Actually just, forget it.'" Hard to imagine that was the case, but Robert will be fully clothed this evening for his movie's big NYC premiere - we'll be there live on the red carpet and tweeting the whole time, so make sure to check back!

Etsy Labs Berlin, Etsy's first international office, is well on its way to becoming a dream in vintage and handmade. Our goal is to create an inspiring and efficient work environment showcasing only vintage and handmade products from around the world. No newly mass-produced goods will ever sully our hallowed halls. So, take that, Ikea!

Over the last couple of weeks we have accumulated lists of products from Etsy, met table-makers and painters, visited vintage stores and flea markets, and shared our concept with creative folks here in Berlin. We are currently working with Berlin-based artist, Luis Negron, to build out our raw, industrial space into a multifunctional exhibition, gallery, workshop and community center.

While work proceeds, we have been making progress on furnishing the office.

Some of our favorite pieces so far are from a local maker/vintage curator named Corinne. She has an incredible talent for finding and then restoring or altering vintage furniture and lighting fixtures. She also builds her own, all in a dark and treasure-laden storefront studio in Prenzlauerberg.

This atmospheric light fixture, built by her out of steel and plastic, uses parts from an old supermarket display.

The industrial chairs with the floating seats were restored treasures from the 1950s. On one of them, a pillow from cosedolci greets us each day.

Another favorite from Corrine is the large wooden table pictured below. She built it originally to serve as her kitchen counter space, but we bought it from her, leaving an empty spot in her home, but filling a giant one in our hearts. Atop it sits a Kaiser-Leuchten desk lamp from the 1930s, and beside it, two vintage Eames chairs.

The giant map of Europe, a planning tool for our crusade, was found at the Flea Market in Mauerpark in Prenzlauerberg, a must-see when in Berlin.

We drink lots of water mit gas here in Germany, and we do so in handmade glasses from YAVAglass. Converted from old soda bottles, they are a recycled treasure.

A local potter made us mugs, containers for tea and coffee, and bowls for eating our nutty and twiggy musli.

We are just at the beginning of our journey, and we invite you to join us over the next couple of months as we document the making of an Etsy office. You are all invited to join us when we have our official opening on April 1, 2010, but until then we just hope that our vintage silverware arrives soon from Etsy. We're dying to stop eating with our fingers.
