Tiger Woods and his wife Elin Nordegren (PHOTOS) were seen kissing Monday, their first openly witnessed kiss in months, according to RadarOnline. A source tells the web site that "they were hugging and they were kissing right out in the open," adding that "people in the neighborhood are getting used to seeing them together again."

While additional details about the supposed kiss are scarce, one former mistress has talked about the golf superstar's kissing style. Jaimee Grubbs, who has stripped down for two different magazines in recent months, said her first kiss with Woods "very gentle, very sweet" and "wasn't quick."

Another alleged mistress, Jamie Jungers (PHOTOS), says she had "amazing, just crazy" sex with Woods against a wall. She also says she slept with Tiger the night his father died. Reading Don Peck’s article in the March issue of The Atlantic, “HOW A NEW JOBLESS ERA WILL TRANSFORM AMERICA”, left me feeling deflated, ‘empty as a pocket’ in Paul Simon’s words.

In the first instance, it triggered my fight response. What to do (and do it now) to protect my friends and my children from the potential downward financial, emotional, and social spiral that joblessness could create if Peck’s and others’ predictions are even close to accurate.

Signs of Trouble That Peck Reports

* average duration of unemployment now extends beyond 6 months (first since 1948);
* in the past year a job loss, a reduction in hours, or a pay cut hit 44% of families;
* number of delinquent mortgages in November at 1 in 7, up from 1 in 10 a year earlier;
* no other circumstance produces a larger decline in mental health and well-being than being involuntarily out of work for 6 months or more;
* we are 11 years into a period of decline, much deeper than the latest recession.

Sobering thoughts for Americans to be sure, all of which led me to change my stance on the amount of emergency funds you should have available. This relationship between consumption and saving is a precarious balance and should reflect changing circumstances, both yours and that of the economy.

Given that so many of us use multiple credit cards with ridiculously generous limits, I had relaxed the traditional rule of thumb about keeping 6 months of income available in highly liquid assets. In the past I felt comfortable that 3 months would be adequate. Not any more thanks to The Atlantic article.

The challenge, however, when budgets are tight is to squeeze that much out of monthly expenses. This represents a significant amount of cash that few can manage to hold back from consumption when every dime is allocated for something.

Reading this article will help you find the motivation to try if not the immediate cash.

Tiger Woods changed his phone number five times in a single year, according to a PGA golfer who has texted Woods in the past. Mark Calcavecchia tells Golf.com that after the fifth number switch, he said, "Man, you change phone numbers more than I change underwear."

It is safe to assume that Calcavecchia and Woods did not text each other like Tiger allegedly did with Jaimee Grubbs, the reported mistress who has stripped down for magazines twice in recent months. In a batch of text messages she says Tiger sent her, Woods wrote, "I need you." The National Enquirer, a supermarket tabloid that has reported on aliens, plastic surgeries and celebrity cellulite thighs, is in the running for the Pulitzer Prize after breaking the news on John Edwards affair with Rielle Hunter.

He is about to be indicted by a federal grand jury for using campaign funds to help hide his trysts with the ex-mistress.

Executive editor Barry Levin said he wants to open up a Washington, D.C. bureau and unfold more political sandals. It's good business, but it's also good journalism, according to Levin. “It still shows the reader that wealthy people, rich people, people who they may admire — when you take away the money, have the same types of problems that they have in real life,” he told the New York Times.

The Times takes a look into the Enquirer's secret sauce. How did they break the political career-crushing story?

Here's how it all went down:

They got a call on their LA tip line that Rielle was spilling about her affair with the presidential candidate back in late September 2007.
In the Oct. 22, 2007 issue, David Perel printed an piece about Edwards’s secret affair, but the woman was not named in the piece.
Bloggers sniffed out the woman was Rielle Hunter, a campaign videographer.
More tips poured in, including one that Rielle was pregnant. The Enquirer rented a cottage in a gated community in North Carolina, where they heard she was staying in a gated community. That way they could get pictures of her without getting gruff from guards.
Reporters looked up local obstetricians and staked out two or three locations for more than two weeks.
They finally saw Rielle heading in for an appointment and snapped photos.
They rolled out their big "John Edwards Love Child Scandal” scoop in the Dec. 31 issue under seven reporters’ bylines.
On July 22, The Enquirer published another article noting that Edwards “was caught visiting his mistress and secret love child.” Photos were posted in its Aug. 18 issue that showed him playing with the baby at a hotel.
Boom! The story exploded across the mainstream media.
On Aug. 8, Edwards appeared on “Nightline” and sent out a statement explaining himself, although he would not admit he was the father of the baby until months later.

Now the Enquirer is in the running for the Pulitzer. Some critics will say they don't deserve the prize, since they posted articles from anonymous sources and paid some tipsters for information. But other admired journalists, like the New Yorker's Pulitzer Prize winning reporter Seymour Hersh, have used anonymous sources, although not without criticism.

It comes down to whether the Enquirer fulfilled a journalistic mission--and they did. They dug up the truth about a politician who was deceiving his constituents. They combined hard-nosed shoeleather reporting with unconventional (to traditional media) reporting tactics. The Pulitzer board should hand them a prize, unless they are too snobby to give credit where credit is due.

Stephanie Clifford makes the argument [1] that The National Enquirer has risen to the level of Journalistic Credibility since the tabloid has now been nominated for a Pulitzer in honor of its coverage of the John Edwards affair. Barry Levine, the Enquirer’s executive editor in New York, describes the Eureka moment when he realized his publication was sitting on top of a big story. Mr. Levine was intrigued when he looked up Mr. Edwards on Google and found a poll saying that the candidate and his wife, Elizabeth, had one of the most admired marriages of all the candidates. That meant Mr. Edwards was on a pedestal, and revelations of an affair could knock him off it — in line with The Enquirer’s mission. “It still shows the reader that wealthy people, rich people, people who they may admire — when you take away the money, have the same types of problems that they have in real life,” he said. So this kind of gossip-oriented hit piece is what the Times's Clifford thinks "earns" a publication "some credit" in the world of mainstream journalism. That makes sense considering how the media collectively jerked it to the scribblings in Game Change, the book written by high school cafeteria stenographers John Heilemann and Mark Halperin. This was a book about politics for people with no interest in politics, but tons of interest in petty gossip. If you're interested in the corporate takeover of American politics, or government corruption, or journalism, Game Change may not be the right book for you. But if you're interested in reading about a hysterical, cancer-ridden Elizabeth confronting her adulterous husband in a parking lot, and tearing her blouse off during the frenzy, then read on. If one considers that the Times's Michiko Kakutani describes Game Change as serving up "a spicy smorgasbord of observations, revelations and allegations [2]," then it becomes easier to understand how the Times thinks the Enquirer was doing solid journalistic work in outing Edwards even though John Edwards was no longer a presidential candidate, or holding any kind of public office when the story broke. Kakutani goes on to admit that some of those "spicy observations" are based on journalist-like legwork, while others "simply crystallize rumors and whispers from the campaign trail," and some are "hard to verify independently as more than spin or speculation on the part of unnamed sources." But nevermind. Journalmalism is sure fun to read! Clifford makes the argument that there is "strong support" for the Enquirer bid from other publications and journalists. Those publications include Newsweek AKA The People Who Can't Define 'Terrorism [3],' Politicsdaily.com (who?), and the Times's own spiritual advisor, Ross Douthat. It's like Newsweek senior writer Steve Tuttle says, "If Hitler is, indeed, still alive and living in Argentina, and their reporting proves it, why shouldn't they be honored?" Indeed. In fairness to the Enquirer, the Edwards story was certainly an impressive catch for a tabloid magazine. However, that doesn't suddenly mean the Enquirer had joined the ranks of Serious Media. They're still a gutter-dredging rag that publishes celebrity gossip and outright lies. Erm, of course, the mainstream media led the parade into Iraq, constantly uses anonymous sources [4], and obsesses over Tiger Woods like he's a close, personal relative. (At one point in the article, in a rare moment of "thoughtful" dissent, Clifford scoffs that the Enquirer, "ran pieces based entirely on anonymous sources." Outrageous! Certainly, the [5]Times [6] would never do that [7], right?) If anything, the mainstream media has begun to resemble the Enquirer, and not the other way around. This means the standards for solid journalism are now so low that the Enquirer -- of all godforsaken publications -- has been nominated for a Pulitzer. Clifford did get one thing right: the Times and the Enquirer do have tons in common. Only, not in a good way. Congress’s push to kneecap greenhouse gas regulation got a little stronger today when Sen. John Rockefeller (D- coal WV) introduced a bill that would delay for two additional years any EPA regulation of stationary sources like power plants and oil refineries.

The Washington Post’s Juliet Eilperin reports some of Rockefeller’s quotes, not worth repeating here, and points out that the bill is “one of several recent congressional efforts to curb the EPA's authority to address climate change under the Clean Air Act.”

Rockefeller’s move comes one day after EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson announced that she plans to modify the agency’s 2009 proposal for stationary sources in order to sweep in fewer facilities. “At [a Senate subcommittee] appropriations hearing, Jackson said state regulatory agencies have informed EPA that the 25,000-ton threshold would affect too many small sources not currently subject to Clean Air Act requirements,” according to BNA news service (subscription). Jackson said EPA will likely raise the threshold to 75,000.

So while EPA is trying to be flexible, the Senate continues to play games. Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R- oil AK) is sponsoring a resolution of disapproval for EPA’s endangerment finding. The endangerment finding is not regulation in and of itself. It is a formal statement that says, based on scientific study, greenhouse gases pose a threat to human health, welfare, and the environment. If the resolution of disapproval passes (which it won’t), EPA would be prohibited from making any similar findings, now and in the future. An identical resolution has been introduced in the House.

Rockefeller’s bill isn’t quite as bad as Murkowski’s resolution. The Rockefeller bill would only stall regulation for two years, whereas Murkowski’s measure could kill regulation. Also, the Rockefeller bill only takes aim at stationary sources; it would still allow EPA to regulate tailpipes. Perhaps most importantly, Rockefeller’s bill targets an EPA policy decision – the decision to regulate stationary sources at a certain threshold. It does not subvert the underlying science that serves as the foundation for climate change policy and debate.

Of course, the easiest way for Sens. Rockefeller and Murkowsi and their colleagues to take the bite out of EPA regulation would be to pass comprehensive climate change legislation, a la cap and trade. But why waste time writing real, substantive legislation when you can just slap your name on the legislative equivalent of the National Enquirer…

Tiger Woods' wife, Elin Nordegren, is moving back in with the embattled golfer, according to RadarOnline. The web site reports that the Swedish ex-model (PHOTOS) has decided to once again live with her husband, a major development if previous reports are to be believed.

She has been repeatedly photographed without her wedding ring and at one point a divorce was said to be "100 percent on." However, more recently she has reportedly dumped her divorce lawyer and spent time with Woods.

A federal grand jury is about to indict John Edwards, sources tell the National Enquirer. The grand jury has been investigating the former presidential candidate since April 2009 for possible misuse of campaign funds -- Edwards had mistress Rielle Hunter on his payroll -- and indictment is now imminent. The Enquirer talked to one friend who revealed that John was "terrified":
"While he believes he's done nothing illegal in trying to hide his extramarital affair with Rielle and their daughter, he thinks the Feds are going to make an example of him."
It hasn't been a great winter for the former presidential candidate. On the one hand, there has been Andrew Young, former Edwards aide and admitted accomplice in concealing the affair, stepping forward with a tell-all memoir of campaign trail debauchery and details of an Edwards-Hunter sex tape. On the other, recently-separated-from wife Elizabeth has threatened to sue Young for "alienation of affection," while friends told the Enquirer that Edwards beat her in a marriage-ending fight.

The Enquirer got lucky and was right about Edwards' affair. Are they pushing their luck?

It seems the grand jury in the Eastern District of North Carolina does frequently meet on Thursdays. (Grand juries sit for 12 to 18 months. In lesser populated districts, they meet a few days a month.)

Does the Enquirer merely have a scoop that the grand jury is concluding the investigation, and realizing it has a 50% chance of being right, jumping the gun and choosing the option that would boost their traffic? Or, is there a leak from John Edwards' camp? [More....]

Assuming an Indictment is expected this week, would the U.S. Attorney's office have let Edwards' lawyer know early to make arrangements for a surrender and appointment with pre-trial services for an initial appearance on Friday? Would someone in that chain of info have leaked to the Enquirer? If Edwards knows, it's possible he would have mentioned it to a close friend. (The Enquirer cits a friend of Edwards as saying Edwards is "terrified" of an Indictment. But what close friend of John Edwards would talk to the Enquirer, of all publications? Who helps the enemy of their close friend?

Or, is the U.S. Attorney gearing up for a press conference and the Enquirer just put two and two together from that?

On December 1, President Obama nominated Thomas G. Walker for U.S. Attorney in the Eastern District of North Carolina, and Sen. Kay Hagen reportedly extracted a promise that the current U.S. Attorney, George Holding, who has been sheparding the Edwards and Mike Easley probes, would stay in office until the investigations are completed. And Republican Sen. Richard Burr said he'd block Walker's confirmation until the probes are completed.

I don't doubt the grand jury is winding up. But I'm also not taking the Enquirer's word for it. And I hope I hope John Edwards is not indicted.

If you've had the pleasure of being both amused and confused by the blogger known as Jon Swift (real name: Al Weisel), that was by design. His tongue was always so tightly plugged in his cheek that you sometimes wondered if he was really a "reasonable conservative who likes to write about politics and culture. Since the media is biased I get all my news from Fox News, Rush Limbaugh and Jay Leno monologues."

Al's mother let his readers know about his untimely passing by posting a comment on his blog.

I don't know how else to tell you all who love this blog. I am Jon Swift's Mom and I guess I'm going to OUT him. He was Al Weisel, my beloved son. Al was on his way to his father's funeral in VA when he suffered 2 aortic aneurysms, a leaky aortic valve and an aortic artery dissection from his heart to his pelvis. He had 3 major surgeries within 24 hours and sometime during those surgeries also suffered a severe stroke. We, his 2 sisters, his brother, his partner and his best friend since he was 9 years old were with him as he took his last breath. We have all lost a shining start who warmed our hearts, tormented us and made us laugh as he giggled at our pulling something over on us. He passed away on February 27, 2010. My beloved child will live on in so many hearts. I miss him more than I can say. If you are on Facebook, go to organizations and join "Friends of Al Weisel, Unite!" One of my favorite columns of his, "Great Moments in Election-Year Blogging," is so hilarious when I went to the page to get the link, I started reading and laughing as hard I did when I read it for the first time.

While the mainstream media requires their sources practically to be saints before they will even think of publishing sensational allegations, the prestigious World Net Daily is under no such constraints. It reported on Larry Sinclair's allegations that he did cocaine and had sex with Barack Obama in the back of a limousine without making him jump through all the hoops a mainstream media organization or even the National Enquirer would have required. Although some people didn't find Larry Sinclair's story credible considering his criminal record and the fact that he failed a lie detector test, WND decided to publish the allegations and let the people decide. Although many in the conservative blogoshpere also doubted Sinclair's veracity, some, like Rusty Shackleford at Jawa Report, decided the gloves were off after the National Enquirer ran a salacious report on Sarah Palin, and reluctantly decided to link to the story anyway, because, as he explains, "this kind of slime is now in play." Mick Stockinger at Uncorrelated agreed that "it's only fair" to bring it up and Rude News called it "tit for tat." That oughta teach the National Enquirer.
