6. Facilitates placement and orientation of short-term volunteers including service learning students and interns, service project groups, United Way Day of Caring participants, entertainers and special event volunteers.
7. Acknowledges volunteer contributions by giving regular, supportive feedback; acknowledging individual efforts; maintaining correspondence; organizing appreciation events.
8. Maintains volunteer program records by maintaining volunteer database and files; recording volunteer hours and statistics.
9. Coordinates “ElderHealth Ambassadors” by recruiting, training, and scheduling employees and volunteers to staff community outreach events.
10. Coordinates Outreach events: Update event participation calendar and arrange staffing (self, other staff or Ambassadors) of outreach events.
11. Assists in E-Marketing: Help implement e-marketing plan by drafting and soliciting content and uploading to Constant Contact, Facebook and other social media.
12. Ensures program quality by performing regular program evaluations; works with supervisor to analyze and integrate evaluation feedback.
13. Other projects and duties as assigned.

Qualifications include:
1. Excellent communication and customer service skills.
2. Ability to make effective and professional verbal presentations.
3. Effective organizational and time management skills.
4. Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.

This tasty recipe has all the flavors that I could imagine would make a chicken dish great. And it is a very easy recipe to put together for a weekday meal.

Sweet and Spicy Sticky Chicken

The title - “Sweet and Spicy Sticky Chicken” - doesn’t that just sound super yummy? It brings to mind a barbeque-like idea for this chicken dish BUT it’s not barbeque—it’s just a braised chicken dish that is delicious.
I’ve made this dish several times already. The recipe calls for chicken thighs but this last time I made it, I used chicken wings and that worked out good too. I think thighs and legs are probably the best parts to use, though, as they hold up better than wings in a braise.

Intensify the Flavor

Midway through the cook, you’ll have to take the chicken out so that it doesn’t get overcooked and mushy. The most important thing to remember is to reduce that sauce down a lot after taking the chicken out. The flavors really intensify when you let the sauce reduce to a thick sticky texture. Once the sauce gets to that point, it is a good idea to put the chicken back into the sauce to let the sauce really absorb into the chicken.
The flavors in this dish reminds me a little of adobo but the addition of ginger, dried chile flakes, and brown sugar gives it a special twist. For me, it’s not very spicy at all and if you like your dishes more spicy, you can definitely double or even triple the chile flakes. It works well for my family though—the kids can handle this level of heat and the adults still get a little sum’n sum’n.
Throw a little garnish of cilantro or extra green onions and you’re good to go. Make it and see how this wonderfully intense-flavored dish gets wolfed down quickly!

Sweet and Spicy Sticky Chicken

adapted from Cooking New American
Ingredients:
1 kg (2 lbs) chicken (dark meat is preferable or chicken wings)
1 Tbsp peanut or vegetable oil
3 scallions (white and green parts), thinly sliced
Cilantro sprigs as garnish or just use another scallion, thinly sliced
Sauce:
1/2 cup dark brown sugar
1/4 cup fish sauce
1/3 cup water
3 Tbsp rice-wine vinegar
2 Tbsp soy sauce
1 Tbsp minced fresh ginger (about 2 inches)
1 clove garlic, minced (yeah, here I go again, I used about 2-3)
1/2 tsp freshly ground black pepper
1/2 tsp crushed red chile flakes (or more if you like it spicier)

Sauce Ingredients for Sweet and Spicy Sticky Chicken

Method:
1. In a bowl, whisk together the brown sugar, fish sauce, water, rice wine vinegar, soy sauce, ginger, garlic, pepper, and red chile flakes.
2. Heat the oil in a large frying pan over med heat. Add the scallions and cook until soft, about 3 mins.
3. Add the chicken and the brown sugar mixture. Turn the heat to high and bring to a boil. As soon as it comes to a boil, reduce the heat to low and simmer, turning the chicken occasionally, until cooked, 25-30 mins.

Adding Sauce to Chicken

4. Remove the chicken from the pan and cover with foil to keep warm. Increase the heat to high and reduce the sauce by half or until it is slightly thickened and resembles a bubbling caramel sauce. Return the chicken to the sauce to coat and absorb more of the sauce.
5. Plate up and garnish with the cilantro sprigs or scallions.

TEAM-MATES AND SWORN ENEMIES (2)

Last week we had a first look at team-mates who didn't see eye-to-eye off the field. The Knowledge inbox has swelled with further tales of dressing-room disharmony.

Dean Johnson suggests Kenny Burns and Trevor Francis at Birmingham. The pair had squared up after Burns had caught Francis with a training-ground tackle – "Trevor didn't like it, and he stood up to me. So I just gave him a little tap ... you know, a butt ... Trevor went off in a hump" – though Burns has since played down their feud in his autobiography. "We moved in different circles," he wrote. "We just didn't drink in the same places. I'd go down the social club, play a couple of frames of snooker and have a couple of bets, whatever, he would possibly drink in a wine bar. He had his own friends at Forest as well [Later in his career Francis had followed Burns to the City Ground]. Obviously a lot was made out of things between us, but it wasn't as bad as everyone said."

In 1982 Jean-François Larios was kicked out of France's World Cup squad amid rumours he had been having an affair with Michel Platini's wife. The pair, though, were never sworn enemies as team-mates – they had played together for St Etienne but Platini left that summer for Juventus and Larios never played for France again.

Dave Langlois writes to suggest that Santiago Cañizares and defender Miroslav Djukic "hated each other" while at Valencia. Hate might be a bit strong, though they apparently refused to speak to one another for five years. "We do not talk," said Djukic in November 2000. El País, via a slightly unhelpful online translation, reveals: "Until now it was an open secret that the two Valencia players had not just treatment, that the estrangement was due to fights on the pitch."

When the colossal egos of Edmundo and Romário met at Vasco de Gama in 1999 fireworks were always likely – though they had previously been friends the latter had depicted the former on the men's toilet door at his Café do Gol bar a year earlier much to Edmundo's chagrin.

Troubled brewed in 2000 when prior to a game Romário was handed the captaincy. The deposed captain – guess who – went home in a serious huff, and the pair sniped at each other thereafter, with one incident, Romário taking a penalty and missing when Edmundo had expected to take it, causing the affair to flare up. Edmundo called his striker partner the "Prince" to the club president's "King". Romário, with fairly sharp wit, tagged his team-mate as "the court jester". The turbulent relationship ended when Edmundo left for Santos in 2000.

And one of the more famous on-field bust-ups came between Charlton's Mike Flanaghan and Derek Hales in an FA Cup tie against Maidstone United, then of the Southern League, in January 1979. With five minutes to go the scores were level. Hales made a run towards goal, Flanagan, the ball at his feet, delayed the pass and by the time Hales had received the ball he had been caught offside.

"Words were exchanged between Hales and Flanagan about the fact that he hadn't passed earlier and the two moved towards each other," writes Keith Peacock, a team-mate of Hales and Flanagan, in his autobiography. "They went head to head and Hales threw the first punch. He wasn't the kind of guy to see what the other fellow would do. Blows were exchanged." But the incident had merely brought to a head something that had been bubbling under the surface beforehand. "It was a bit more than that," said Hales, without elaborating, in 2005. "The manager should have sorted it out beforehand."

Hales was sacked and then reinstated. Flanaghan was fined then handed in a transfer request. "I was seen as the nasty one," admitted Hales. "But it takes two to tango."

Plenty more of this next week, but keep them coming to the usual address.

ROCHDALE'S SUCCESSORS?

"With Rochdale on the verge of promotion, their record of being in the same division for 35 years looks like ending," writes Phil Rhodes, poking fate with a big pointy stick. "We all need to know who outside the Premier League will have been in the same division the longest if Dale get promoted. A list of the five teams who follow Rochdale in the current list may make for interesting reading and also show how fluid the Football League is."

Indeed Rochdale have been neither promoted nor relegated since 1973-74 and with their League Two rivals currently indistinct dots in the Spotland rear-view mirror, their 36-year drought may be about to come to an end. But who will replace them as the Football League's most entrenched club?

Darlington, who have been bobbling along in the basement since 1992, are on an 18-season stretch in the same division. The Shakers could well drop into the Blue Square Premier at the end of this season, at which point their title would be taken by Oldham, who have been in the third tier for 13 seasons. The top five, we reckon, looks something like this:

This month the Knowledge celebrates its 10th birthday and in honour of that fact we'll be delving into the column's very earliest days for our archive slot this month. Here's a question from the second ever Knowledge, as penned by Sean Ingle and Paul MacInnes back in April 2000:

"Please could you name the England U-21 team that played in the Toulon tournament in 1990?" asks Richard Glover

In 1990 England's U-21 squad won the eight-nation tournament in Toulon for the first time with the following squad:

Crossley, Muggleton, Lee, Sharpe, Le Saux, Barrett, Tiler, Sherwood, James, Ebbrell (capt), Blake, Matthew, Thomas, Stuart, Slater, Olney, Robins.

Shortly afterwards the full England side reached the semi-finals of the World Cup, and many thought this U-21 team would make up the nucleus of England's 1994 World Cup side.

Things didn't quite turn out as forecast, although some players did go on to become full England internationals (notably Le Saux, Sharpe and Sherwood), and one (Crossley) bizarrely played for Wales. Sadly, most of the exalted class of 1990 have become journeyman club players, plying their trade in the lower leagues.

"Noel Bailie, of Linfield in Northern Ireland, had recently played his 990th game (all for one club) and looks set to achieve 1,000 by the end of the season," writes Keith Minnis. "I think I'm right in saying both Peter Shilton and Ray Clemence have achieved this. However, Noel Bailie is a centre-half, what other professional outfield players, if any, have achieved 1,000 appearances?"

"Plenty of teams have a City or Town suffix, but is a there a Village? And if so, what's the highest level they've played at?" ponders Philip Genochio.

I am ashamed to say I have at least a dozen further examples I could give, each one cost me money and I never made a single sale.  I felt pretty useless but some 6 weeks in I realized that if I was to succeed I needed to understand the mechanics of internet marketing so that I could build a money making business based on sound principles and a solid foundation.  Sure I’d picked up a lot of information through trial and error but let me tell you there are so many things to take account of that my head was spinning and I’d reached the point of paralysis by analysis. I didn’t know what to do, when to do it or even why I was doing it.  Once I finally persuaded myself to step back – not an easy decision – I started looking for some sort of course that could teach me the basics in a logical way. A program that built step by step into a comprehensive body of information, tools and resources which could help make me successful.  And that’s just what I did. Following his team's season-ending loss to South Florida over the weekend, Connecticut head coach Jim Calhoun vowed to bench three seniors and shake up his starting lineup in an attempt to "wake-up" his free-falling club. The starting lineup didn't change and neither did the final result as the Huskies appeared apathetic for the better part of 40 minutes and were routed by No. 13 St. John's, 73-51.

The Johnnies jumped out to a ten-point lead early in the first half and UConn never got any closer than eight. Sean Evans led the way for the Red Storm, scoring 19 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Paris Horne added 13 points.

Remarkably, Connecticut has now lost six straight Big East Tournament games.

It was an almost bizarrely apathetic performance from the Huskies, who capped one of the more bizarre seasons in program history.

The Huskies began the season ranked 13th but lost three straight games in early January and fell out of the top 25. On Jan. 20 Calhoun announced that he was taking a medical leave of absence for reasons he wouldn't detail. Three days later the Huskies routed then No. 1 Texas, a performance they more than counteracted by promptly dropping their next three. Left for dead by most bracketologists, they then responded by stringing together a three-game winning streak that included a pair of victories over top-ten opponents. Naturally, that run was followed by a season-ending streak of four losses. There had also been talk in the days leading up to the game that Calhoun, the man who built the program from virtually nothing, would not be returning to Connecticut.

The win was a check in the corner of Norm Roberts, the embattled St. John's head coach who many feel needs a strong showing in Madison Square Garden to keep his job.

The Red Storm will face No. 5 Marquette tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m.

Social media plays an important role in problem solving and strategy development in the workplace according to a new survey of 900 human resources executives conducted by Toolbox.com and PJA.

Among HR executives and professionals, social media usage outpaced editorial and vendor content consumption. Respondents used social media at a rate of 3.77 hours per week, compared to 2.77 hours of online editorial content and 2.13 hours of online vendor content.

The survey indicated active participation in social media is an important part of the HR job role and acts as a resource for experience-based knowledge in the workplace. Respondents said staying current (78%) and networking with peers (71%) as the most popular uses of social media.

Additionally, more than half have responded to a question asked by a peer in an online community, while nearly 50 percent have built their personal knowledge network by making connections with peers.

"This survey proves HR professionals have been fast adopters of social media, not just for networking but for improving their value as professionals," said Mike O'Toole, president at PJA Advertising + Marketing.

"They clearly identify social media channels as a way to increase their expertise and build their professional reputation."

Key highlights from the survey include:

*Social media represents 43% of total media consumption among HR respondents (compared to 32% for editorial and 25% for vendor content).

*Deep experience is seen as the most important attribute in a social media expert, followed by thoughtful and detailed responses.

*Nearly half of respondents say that a social media presence greatly increases or increases their value as a job candidate, while more than 50% claim that social media is important or very important in building their personal brand.

SB Nation's Mike Prada loves March Madness as much as the rest of us, but in this week's edition of the SB Nation NBA Power Rankings, he reminds us that March matters in the NBA, too.

We're a week away from March Madness, meaning everyone conveniently forgets about the NBA to go ga-ga over a bunch of amateurs dribbling around the perimeter and bricking threes. (I'm kidding college basketball fans. But only a little). That's your right, I suppose.

However, you'll end up missing a key part of the NBA calendar. March is when the contenders push for the playoffs and the pretenders start tanking. March is when we figure out who enters the playoffs hot and who enters the playoffs stumbling. March is when teams become settled after the trade deadline and really show us who they are.

If you're playing well in March, chances are you're going to play well in April, May and June. The Spurs used to own March, using the month as their sign the real season had begun. Naturally, the Spurs won several championships and became the closest thing to a dynasty that we saw in the NBA this decade. The Celtics went 21-4 in March and April of 2008, which spurred them to the title that season. In other words, March matters a lot.

March also helps us get some separation in our power ranking tiers. We know now for a fact that ten teams are completely out of it. Depending on how the Bucks and Spurs do the rest of the season, we also know for a fact that there are 12 shoo-ins for the playoffs and eight more teams fighting for positioning. Finally, depending on how Boston responds this week, we know there are six or seven teams that are a threat to win it all. By the end of the month, we'll probably have even more clarity on these tiers.

I guess it's not March Madness, because it's not as exciting. But it's also certainly not March Meaningless. And since that was a horrible pun, let's get on with the rankings.

IN THEIR OWN CATEGORY

30. New Jersey Nets: 7-56 overall, 1-3 last week

The Nets have won two games in two weeks. Rejoice!

In all seriousness, they are playing much better recently, and a big reason is Devin Harris. Since the all-star break, Harris is averaging 20.6 points and 7.5 assists per game, which is a significant improvement from where he was in the first half of the season. Toss in an improved Courtney Lee, and the Nets are actually getting some legit production out of their so-called Big 3 (Harris, Lee, Brook Lopez). Sure, the other 11 players on the roster stink (especially Yi Jianlian, because we have to get our shots in at Yi Jianlian), but they're not really a part of the future anyway. Things are looking up.

(Think of this after the Nets drop to the fourth pick, select Derrick Favors and overpay for Rudy Gay with their cap space this summer).

DREGS OF THE LEAGUE

29. Minnesota Timberwolves: 14-50 overall, 0-3 last week.

I guess it's understandable for a team to start tanking in March, but damn, they could at least be subtle about it. In last night's loss to Dallas, Kevin Love played 12 minutes. That's it. As I mentioned last week, Kevin Love is all sorts of awesome. If you look at the advanced stats -- you know, the kind that do a better job of measuring real impact on the game -- Love is having a historically good season for young forwards. How he plays only 12 minutes in a game is beyond me. I'm going to assume the Wolves are tanking, because no coach could be that stupid.

28. Golden State Warriors: 17-46 overall, 0-5 last week.

Warrior fans are among the most loyal in sports. Don't believe me? Take one look at the stands at a Warriors home game. They're pretty close to full, even though the Warriors have made exactly one playoff appearance in 16 years. So when one rabid Warriors fan writes that he's reached the breaking point and will not renew his season tickets, it speaks volumes about just how bad it's become. Even Warriors fans, who are predisposed to failure and incompetency, are fed up.

For everyone's sake, I hope Larry Ellison from Oracle buys the team already. Can I get an amen?

Coaching is a tough profession, don't get me wrong. You only have a certain amount of control over your team, and it's much less than any fan thinks you have. Still, Jim O'Brien committed a pretty epic blunder this week. The Pacers hung around in the first half against the mighty Lakers last Wednesday, led by strong play from Josh McRoberts. But when asked about McRoberts' play, here's what O'Brien had to say.

"It's irrelevant," O'Brien said. "Try to do it in a winning effort. It's really irrelevant."

See Josh, you gotta show more fight when it matters! Like this.

Wait, nevermind, that was in a losing effort too. I guess you're screwed then.

I have nothing snarky to say about Rodney Stuckey's scary collapse. Here's hoping he'll ultimately be okay. I'm also happy to see the Pistons respond with a big win over the Rockets without Stuckey on Sunday. In Stuckey's absence, Will Bynum had 12 points, 11 assists and just one turnover. He's also a free agent, and you'd think he'd like to go somewhere else where he won't be stuck behind three other guards in the pecking order. Whoever gets him will be getting one hell of a bargain.

(You hear that, Wizards? Whoever gets Will Bynum will be getting one hell of a bargain.)

24. Philadelphia 76ers: 23-39 overall, 1-2 last week.

The fact that they beat Toronto in the impossible early-afternoon Sunday game the Raptors always seem to win just underscores why this team is so frustrating. They have talent, but they have no cohesion and terrible coaching. It should come as no surprise that Eddie Jordan is on the chopping block.

It also should come as no surprise that Sixers fans would rather have Jordan Sams from SB Nation's Sixers blog Liberty Ballers be the team's next coach than Doug Collins.

23. New York Knicks: 22-41 overall, 2-2 last week.

There are three constants in this world. Death, taxes, and the New York Knicks being confusing. I don't even bat an eye when they follow up a 20-point home loss to the Nets (which included an 0-18 performance from three-point range) with a one-point win against the Hawks. Just sit and nod.

22. Sacramento Kings: 22-41 overall, 2-2 last week

Someone needs to teach Spencer Hawes how to rebound. In the wake of Sunday's loss to Oklahoma City, a game in which the Kings were outrebounded 45-33, Sactown Royalty crunched some numbers and found that Hawes is pretty much the only one to blame. In 24 minutes, Hawes grabbed two rebounds. The last time those two teams played, he had three rebounds in 31 minutes. Since Tyreke Evans is the only one allowed to score on the Kings (slight exaggeration), Hawes needs to rebound. Unfortunately, since rebounding can't really be taught, Hawes is kind of screwed. As are the Kings.

21. Los Angeles Clippers: 25-38 overall, 0-3 last week.

The Rockets are struggling since the trade deadline, but it's not Kevin Martin's fault. The Mongoose has stepped up his game in Houston, averaging an efficient 23.3 points per game on just 15.9 shots. Whose fault is it? Well, they miss Carl Landry a lot (and Landry misses them too), and their lack of interior defense and rebounding is really catching up to them. Therefore, it's looking like no playoffs for them.

Which is okay. The Rockets were punting this year anyway after the Yao Ming injury, and they now have a ton of draft picks and assets at their disposal (thanks to Donnie Walsh). I just wish they went back to being plucky overachievers like they were earlier in the season.

On the bright side, Shane Battier does karaoke, in a tongue-in-cheek way.

19. New Orleans Hornets: 32-32 overall, 1-2 last week.

With the news that Chris Paul's injury is more serious than initially expected, let's reopen the debate about Darren Collison. We know Collison has been outstanding in Paul's place. We also know that it's hard to justify keeping both players around when the Hornets have several other weaknesses at other positions (as well as a hefty luxury-tax bill already in 2010-11). It would seem logical to trade Collison this summer to upgrade another position and/or to help cut costs by forcing anyone acquiring Collison to take on one of the Hornets' bad contracts.

But what happens if Paul's injury problems continue? Paul doesn't exactly have the body of a player who will stand the test of time. He's had two serious injuries already in his career, the other one being in 2006-07. Isn't it nice to have Collison around as insurance? Collison's cheap too (on a rookie contract), so it's not like you're paying through the roof for a backup point guard.

There's one other option (and I'm going to be killed for even bringing this up). What about trading Paul? If you're the Hornets, you have to be concerned not only with Paul's longevity, but also his frustration with the direction of the franchise. This year will mark the second straight year where the team has fallen in the standings, and there isn't too much hope for a major roster reconstruction in the near future. With Collison already in tow, don't you have to at least consider trading Paul while his value is high? I know this is bordering on blasphemy, but you have to at least think about it.

Anyway, none of these questions would have been relevant if Collison wasn't playing out of his mind like he is. So I guess it's a good problem to have.

18. Chicago Bulls: 31-31 overall, 0-2 last week.

Here's a lesson for all those teams that actually make money: do your due dilligence when filling out the end of your bench. Otherwise, you could end up like the Bulls, who are in deep trouble now that Joakim Noah is out for at least three weeks. Noah's a valuable player, but he becomes more valuable when his backups stink. Brad Miller lost about five steps this summer, and the only other center on the roster is Noah's college teammate Chris Richard, who isn't exactly lighting up the D-League. Naturally, the Bulls have lost four in a row after surging into the Eastern Conference playoff picture.

But hey, this is what you get when you strive to win the profitability title instead of the NBA title.

17. Toronto Raptors: 32-29, 1-1 last week.

I really don't want to come across like one of those "offense wins games, but defense wins championships" curmudgeons, but the Toronto Raptors are currently surrendering an average of 112.4 points per 100 possessions this year. This is 1.5 points worse than the 29th-best defensive team. Keep this in mind anyone starts to talk about the Raptors as a dangerous first-round opponent in the playoffs.

16. Charlotte Bobcats: 30-31 overall, 2-1 last week.

Crazy stat of the day: the Bobcats are 4-2 this season against the Lakers and Cavaliers and 26-29 against everyone else. This will become relevant if they make a deep playoff run. In other words, it won't be relevant.

15. Memphis Grizzlies: 33-31 overall, 3-1 last week

I can't begrudge someone for creating a Hasheem Thabeet mix, not when you can find mixes of the most obscure players in the league on YouTube. But could you at least not make it public while Thabeet's in the NBA Developmental League? By doing that, you're just asking me to mock you.

I think it's safe to say timing isn't a strong suit for most YouTube users.

14. Miami Heat: 32-31 overall, 3-0 last week.

I hate this team. Just when we thought they were floundering, they win three straight, including an instant classic against the Lakers on TNT. It's not their fault; in fact, you have to give them a lot of credit for being a .500 team with that roster. But if I'm the Grizzlies, I'm sitting there and thinking, 'How the hell is that team a playoff team? Why can't we be in the Eastern Conference?'

Look at their roster beyond Dwyane Wade. Jermaine O'Neal is having a really good year, but he's your second-best player. Michael Beasley remains terribly inconsistent. The team's two point guards are Rafer Alston, who is threatening to retire after skipping practice, and Carlos Arroyo, who wasn't in the NBA last year. They've given nearly 2700 minutes combined this season to Dorrell Wright, Joel Anthony and Daequan Cook. On paper, they stink. But despite that, they're one game over .500 and could be a dangerous matchup for a team like Atlanta, who they've beaten three of four times this year.

Usually, it's fun to watch a team play better than they should. For some reason, though, Miami is no fun. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that management clearly doesn't care about this season. The Heat, like the Knicks, have had their eyes on 2010 for over two years now, yet they escape the criticism the Knicks get for punting two years of Wade's prime. I want to see Miami's brass criticized, so therefore I want the Heat to miss the playoffs. Instead, they're winning, and I'm mad.

GOOD, BUT NOT GREAT

13. San Antonio Spurs: 36-25 overall, 2-1 last week

Dear television commentators,

Do me a favor. Don't look at the name on the front of the jersey when talking about the Spurs' chances this spring. Look at the facts.

FACT: Tony Parker is hurt and might not be back this season.

FACT: The Spurs have the most difficult closing stretch of any team in the league. Twelve of their final 21 games are on the road. They still have to play Orlando twice, the Lakers twice, at Dallas, at Denver, at Phoenix, at Atlanta, at Boston, at Oklahoma City and at home against Cleveland. That means 11 of their last 21 games are against teams in the top 10 of these power rankings.

FACT: The Spurs still lay eggs in games they should win. Last night, they lost to Cleveland without LeBron James. Here's a visual reaction by a Spurs fan on Pounding the Rock.

At this point, the question shouldn't be whether the Spurs can win the title. Instead, it should be whether they can hold on to a playoff spot. They are five and a half games ahead of Memphis right now, but that closing schedule is brutal. It's totally conceivable that the Spurs fall apart without Tony Parker and miss the playoffs, which I'd personally prefer since I'd love to see a Grizzlies-Lakers first-round series.

So please, ignore the name on the front of the jersey and focus on the facts. If this were any other team, we'd be writing their eulogy already.

12. Portland Trail Blazers: 38-27 overall, 2-0 last week.

This season has seen two firsts for Andre Miller. Earlier this season, he scored 50 points in a game for the first time in his career. This week, he dunked the ball on the fast break for the first time in his career.

Who said he was a bad free agent signing?

(Disclaimer: I'm sure Miller has dunked before, so this is obviously an exaggeration, but I think we can all agree he rarely does it, if ever).

11. Milwaukee Bucks: 33-29 overall, 3-0 last week.

The best team in the league right now that nobody's heard about. Since the trade for John Salmons, the Bucks are 9-1, with their only loss coming on the road in overtime to the Hawks on the second game of a back-to-back. They're so good that fans don't really know how to act.

Salmons and the Bucks have been a perfect match. The Bucks needed someone to score points, even if he's not much of a passer, and Salmons needed to go somewhere where he could shift back to small forward and get his touches. That's the thing about Salmons: he needs minutes and touches, but if he gets them, he suddenly becomes a great two-way player. With the Bulls this year, Salmons was forced to play shooting guard and stand around while Luol Deng took his shots. His defense and passing suffered tremendously. Now, he's getting his minutes and touches, and his defensive intensity has skyrocketed. He looks like the John Salmons we saw in the playoffs last year, if not better.

If I'm one of the top four teams in the East, I'm praying I don't have to play the Bucks. They're so good defensively, particularly with their ball pressure, so they'll tire our guards out. They're not a great scoring team, but they have the two things you need in the playoffs at a bare minimum: an elite post player (Andrew Bogut) and a wing player capable of creating his own shot (Salmons). If Brandon Jennings gets overwhelmed by the playoffs, they have a great, experienced backup in Luke Ridnour that can step in. I don't think Milwaukee will win a series, but I do think they'll tire out whoever they play enough to prevent that team from making a deep playoff run.

Tonight's game against Boston will say a lot about the Bucks. Here's hoping they win.

10. Atlanta Hawks: 40-23 overall, 2-2 last week.

Last year, the Hawks surged to the top of the league early on, only to fall back to the middle of the pack. This year, the same pattern is happening. The Hawks were 20-8 at Christmas; they're just 20-15 since. They haven't beaten an elite team (i.e. a team ahead of them in these rankings) at full strength since January 29, when they beat the Celtics for the fourth time this year (they did beat the Jazz, but the Jazz were playing without Deron Williams). The league has caught up with how the Hawks play, and because they're coached by Mike Woodson, the Hawks haven't adjusted.

Making matters worse, this is the Hawks' time. Joe Johnson's a free agent after the year is over. If they let him go, they fall way back in the standings. If they overpay him (which is what it'll likely take), they stagnate as a team that's about as good as they've been the past couple years. So their time is now either way. Unfortunately, it's looking more and more like the Hawks aren't going to be a major threat in the playoffs.

9. Oklahoma City Thunder: 38-24 overall, 3-1 last week

An area of concern for the Thunder: their once stout defense has been leaking recently. They allowed 107 points to the Kings, 119 to the Nuggets and 102 to the Kings again. They managed to win both games against the Kings, but for a team that needs to defend at a high level to compete, their recent performances are concerning.

On a completely different note, I've decided Nick Collison is a chill bro, or at least more of a chill bro than Michael Scott of the Office.

8. Phoenix Suns: 40-25 overall, 2-1 last week

The Suns are 29th in defensive efficiency, 30th in forced turnovers and 29th in defensive rebounding, yet they're potentially headed for 50 wins again. It's really amazing they're winning so many games.

Speaking of amazing, how crazy is it to see Grant Hill play this well again? I won't say he's the Hill of old, because that would be crazy, but he looks young again. He scores so many points in transition, beating younger players in the dust. He handles the ball when he has to, defends at a high level and makes athletic plays that guys 15 years younger couldn't make. Like this one:

Watching Hill gives me hope that Gilbert Arenas can get his act together, overcome his injuries and be somewhere close to the same player he used to be for the Wizards. If Hill can recover from his injury problems, why can't Arenas? Then, I remember that there's a big difference between the Suns' training staff and the Wizards', and I get depressed again.

CHAMPIONSHIP CONTENDERS

7. Boston Celtics: 40-21 overall, 4-0 last week.

They've won four in a row, so I'll put them back into contender status even though they still looked pretty bad in slipping by the hapless Wizards on Sunday. Maybe they can do it again. Who knows? Maybe there aren't chemistry problems after all. Maybe the Celtics are like that married couple that overcomes all their problems to succeed. Maybe they can win the title again.

Or ... maybe they're winning because they played Detroit, Charlotte, Philadelphia and Washington. The Celtics have games in Milwaukee and Cleveland this week, so we'll find out

6. Utah Jazz: 40-22 overall, 2-0 last week.

It's good to be the Utah Jazz right now. Sure, you've got a pesky luxury tax bill, and you have a big decision to make on Carlos Boozer this summer. But you've also won 21 of your last 26 games, even with an undrafted rookie starting at shooting guard. You also have a likely high lottery selection this year, courtesy Isiah Thomas. Finally, nobody is paying attention to you, even as your tear up the league. Everyone's touting Dallas and Denver as the teams with the best chance of dethroning the Lakers, but nobody's mentioning you. That's just how you want it to be.

5. Denver Nuggets: 42-21 overall, 3-0 last week.

I still believe the Nuggets have the best chance at beating the Lakers in a seven-game series when it's all said and done. Nobody on the Lakers can guard Chauncey Billups, and the Lakers in general struggle with Denver's speed. But the Nuggets are in big trouble with the losses of Kenyon Martin until the playoffs and Ty Lawson for a while. An already shallow team now has to give heavy minutes to Malik Allen and Anthony Carter, two guys who haven't deserved big minutes since 2004. Dallas has already passed them, and Utah is hot on their heels. Hell, Phoenix could overtake them. Playoff seeding matters, because as good as the Nuggets have played the Lakers, they've also let down against other teams.

Denver's also like Atlanta in that this is their best shot. The Nuggets already have $70 million committed to just six players last year, meaning they're going to have to go into penny-pinching mode soon to avoid a huge luxury tax bill. Billups is getting older, as is Martin. Other Western Conference teams are getting better. If the Nuggets don't win this year, they probably won't win in the near future either.

To Denver's credit, at least they're in a better spot than the Hawks because they'll have their core players no matter what. But it's still armageddon for them, and these injuries really don't help.

4. Los Angeles Lakers: 46-18 overall, 1-3 last week.

3. Orlando Magic: 44-20 overall, 3-0 last week.

Let me take you back to the summer of 2008. The Wizards had just signed Gilbert Arenas and Antawn Jamison and were ready to compete for a title (stop laughing please. I said STOP LAUGHING!). Arenas had generously left a little bit of money on the table, enough to sign a backup small forward for about half of the mid-level exception without going over the luxury tax. Arenas' buddy Matt Barnes was then a free agent, having fallen out of favor in Golden State. Arenas never told the Wizards to sign Barnes outright, but that was the implication.

Instead, the Wizards signed Dee Brown. Barnes went on to Phoenix, where he flopped, and now he's in Orlando, where he's become an indispensable player for cheap. He's given the Magic toughness, and, as Orlando Pinstriped Post notes, he's making a tangible difference too. Isn't that exactly the type of player the Wizards have missed the last few years?

That's why Orlando's management is great and the Wizards' isn't. Well, it's just one reason. Imagine Barnes doing this to LeBron James as a member of the Wizards. Of course you'd find that awesome.

2. Dallas Mavericks: 44-21 overall, 4-0 last week.

Dallas has now won 12 games in a row after fleecing Washington in the Caron Butler/Brendan Haywood trade. They're clearly the second-best team in the league at this moment. And yet, Shawn Marion is indicating he isn't so thrilled with how many shots he's getting. This is unbelievable. Marion has played nearly his entire career with Steve Nash or Jason Kidd, and all he's done is complained about it. I'd tell him to go play for the worst team in the league to gain some perspective, but he's already done that (Miami in 2007-08) and nothing has changed.

Can you overcome someone grumbling like this? Yes, of course. Should you have to? No, absolutely not. When is Shawn Marion going to cheer up and realize he's in a great, great situation?

1. Cleveland Cavaliers: 50-15 overall, 3-1 last week.

However, I gotta take a shot at LeBron James while I can. (Be proud, Cavs fans. I haven't taken a single shot at my least favorite player in the league until now). Apparently, Brandon Jennings was a little excited about the win and showed it. This reportedly pissed off LeBron, who told friends he wasn't enthused by Jennings' conduct.

Uhh ... seriously? Pot, meet kettle.

Being an avid sports gambler (one week being totally awesome and then the next week questioning my life on this Earth), I figured it is never too early to look at some possible Final Four matchups and the lines that some Vegas sportsbooks have projected. They have taken the four teams that as of right now would most likely be number 1 seeds (Kansas, Kentucky, Syracuse, and Duke), pitted them against each other and given me some odds to salivate over. Let us take a look: “1. Kansas minus 1 point vs. Syracuse: The Jayhawks, with a record of 29-2 straight-up and 12-15-1 against the point spread, are ranked No. 1 in the Associated Press poll and the ESPN/USA Today coaches’ poll. They received 63 of the 65 first-place votes in the AP poll and 30 of 31 first-place votes in the coaches’ poll. After finishing atop the Big 12 standings, Kansas is poised to secure the overall No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament when the field and seedings are announced Sunday. Syracuse, which received the other first-place vote in the coaches’ poll, is ranked No. 3 in both polls after a short stay at No. 1. The Orange (28-3 straight-up, 19-8 against the spread) was knocked from the top spot — its first appearance at No. 1 during the regular season since 1990 — after losing at Louisville, 78-68, as a 1-point favorite. Both teams are favored to win their conference tournament. Syracuse opened at odds of 17-10 to win the Big East tournament according to Lucky’s sports books odds, ahead of West Virginia (3-1), Villanova (4-1) and Pittsburgh (5-1). Kentucky pick ‘em vs. Syracuse: The Wildcats have been an underdog only once this season, going off as a 1-point ‘dog against Connecticut. The Orange was a small underdog at Georgetown and West Virginia and, early on, against North Carolina.” As you can see Vegas doesn’t see much separation between these 4 teams. If you gave me these four teams I would put Kansas slightly ahead of Syracuse. All the while having Kentucky and Duke fighting it out for third and fourth. To me, Kansas provides everything you want in a national champion. A great senior leader and point guard in Sherron Collins matched with the inside game of Cole Aldrich and the Morris twins. While Syracuse too also has a ton of senior leadership and player of the year candidate in Wesley Johnson, the one thing that might haunt the Orange will be the free throw shooting of Rick Jackson and Arinze Onuaku. John Wall turns the ball over too much for my liking and if the three pointers are not falling for Duke they can look rather pedestrian. So there you go, a little look at what Vegas thinks the possible college basketball lines would be if these four teams make it to Indianapolis. Who do you like?.

A service offering copies of international magazines on a rental basis has launched in Thailand.
The MagPalThailand venture, believed to be the first of its kind anywhere in the world, allows customers in Thailand to rent copies of overseas magazines from the United States and the United Kingdom.
Currently the service is offering a package of ten titles 'for him' and for her' from both countries. The 'for him' package of magazines from the U.K. includes copies of FHM, T3, Gentlemen's Quarterly, Men's Health, Esquire, Performance BMW, MacWorld, FourFourTwo, Car and Loaded. Customers can rent copies of current issues of these titles for a 3-month period for 7,130 baht. The price drops to 2,840 baht for three-month old issues. Packages for 6 and 12 month periods are also on offer. Magazines are delivered to customers who then have to return the issues to the company or face a fine. A fine is also payable for damaged copies.
The concept seems to be exactly the same as the video rental business. But for magazines? Surely if people are going to be paying what is a substantial amount of money for a selection of magazines they're going to want to keep them? The only benefit I can see is the cost saving, but that's only worthwhile if you would be buying most of the ten magazines in the packages anyway. The range is so diverse that I cannot believe anyone in Thailand is buying all ten titles right now, and savvy magazine shoppers know you can get big discounts on a diverse range of overseas magazines from Chatuchak Weekend Market - albeit it's hit and miss exactly what turns up.
Does anyone this this will work? Would anyone use a service like this?

Recently, through a random series of events, I found out that a former associate, Nate Campbell, has had incredible success. It turns out that he was the WBA, WBO and IBF boxing champ at 135 pounds. He recently had to vacate his title because he was two pounds over the weight limit for a fight that he won. But this year he will be fighting for another title at 140 pounds.

What does this have to do with me? Well, as a graduate student at Florida State University (FSU), I decided to try my hand at boxing. I joined the Seminole Boxing Club (not affiliated with the university) and the sport immediately consumed me. I approached boxing with the usual academic, read ‘nerdy,' vigor. I checked out every book on the sport. I read autobiographies and biographies about past champions. I bought how-to books from the local mega-bookstores. But I also put my body where my brain was and trained five times a week, a ritual that lasted the entire time I trained.

I became proficient fairly quickly, which led Frank Jimenez, the owner and trainer to say to me one day, "Bakari, you're getting pretty good. I'm going to have to get Nate to knock you out!" At that time Nate was one of a few professional fighters who would come in and train. He would travel from Jacksonville to Tallahassee, Florida, a 2 ½ hour drive and would box with the other pros, give us pointers and usually ask us existential questions. These questions usually would come after he'd study you intensely for a few minutes.

When Frank finally paired us up Nate began to work his ‘mojo' on me before we entered the ring. He weighed 135 lbs and I was 185 at the time. He stared straight into my eyes, pointed a glove at me and said, " I'll hit you as hard as you hit me!" As I was more interested in the 'sweet science' (I am an academic.) than brawling I didn't have to worry about his caution. I figured he was just trying to get into my head.

True to Frank's word, when I sparred with Nate, he knocked me out. I didn't hit the ground but in the middle of our session, he hit me with a few unseen punches that made me lose consciousness. All I could see was darkness and for a moment I forgot I was boxing until I refocused and saw a small boxing pro in front of me waiting to deal out more punishment.

A month or so after that I quit boxing all together. Not because I was afraid or broken. In fact, the reason I quit was quite calculated. At the time, I was in a Master's program. Although I trained 5 times a week the pros on average trained 6, ran 5 miles in the morning and had 2 to 3 sessions of boxing per day. I trained for 1 ½ hours a day and rarely jogged. It wasn't enough. I was getting too good to continue boxing with the new guys but I didn't want to commit the time and energy that would be required to keep up with the pros.

Final Thoughts

As I sat reading Nate's accomplishments I was amazed. I contemplated that we often can't fathom what the people we know are capable of and also what it took for Nate to achieve that level of proficiency and excellence. Then another thought hit me; one that I toss around a lot.

I quit boxing because I was seeking to become a success in another field. Shortly after obtaining my Master's degree I was accepted into FSU's Doctoral program for Communication. There I spent over 4 years teaching, researching, studying and writing with as much intensity as a professional athlete. Since that time I have become a professor, have been published in newspapers, magazines, have written books and worked with wonderful organizations like Psychology Today.

No, I am not a boxing champion, but I am in the pros and I'm collecting titles in the field I picked. To a great extent, we all are professionals or are on the path to becoming one in the areas we select. I just hope that someone you know doesn't have to become a world champion for you to realize it as well.

Wow. A Pub Minister! Great! Has he got a Ministry staffed with people who do work? No... but he has a ministerial task force, drawing on five Whitehall departments? Is he actually given the time and resources to make change? Well, there is that thing coming up... that election. The Daily Mail notes:

A new government will be in place in less than 12 weeks, Labour or not, and Chancellor Darling is expected to unveil the last Budget of this parliament on March 23. This isn't time enough for Healey to win a campaign to Save the British pub.

If this was such a great idea, why didn't the UK government introduce it in the previous 675 or so weeks since they gained power? Right now they trail in the polls by 5% to 7% but, to be fair, that is half of what they were behind by at Christmas. And is he the man for the job? While 5 or 6 pubs are closing a day 130 families lose their homes a day in the UK. Healey, who also is Minister of Housing, has described repossession as 'the best option' for struggling homeowners according to The Daily Mail.

Sure, it's just politics heading into a tough election but that is the point - it's just politics heading into a tough election.

The guvmint-hatin’ Utah state legislature has just declared a preemptive strike against creating new jobs and revenue in the state. Today, the state senate passed a resolution opposing federal creation of new monuments. A few weeks ago, a Department of the Interior memo brainstorming 14 possible national monuments, including two in Utah, was leaked to a national park-hating member of Congress, creating a firestorm of manufactured controversy throughout the West. In response, Republican-dominated state legislatures are railing against an entirely chimerical federal land grab. Consider it a Sagebrush Rebellion 2.0.

Just how bad for Utah would those new national monuments be?
The Utah state senate’s resolution, following a similar one in the state house of representatives, is not binding on the federal government. The Antiquities Act of 1906 gives the President the power to declare monuments regardless of the opinion of any state legislature. Instead, the resolution is part of a larger Sagebrush Rebellion 2.0, being cynically manufactured by western Republicans.

Consider what impact the national parks and monuments have on Utah.
* In 2008, the last year studied (53 pg pdf), non-local visitors spent $548,251,000 in Utah. The Park Service employed 971 people, and national park-related businesses employed an additional 11,340 people, in Utah.
* The state’s official travel site invites the visitor: "Welcome to Utah, paradise for outdoor enthusiasts! From National Parks to ski resorts…" with a page devoted just to Utah, "America’s National Parks capital" and another page extolling the virtues of Utah’s national monuments.
* These numbers don’t do justice to the pride that Utahns take in their land. The state license plate shows Delicate Arch in Arches National Park (formerly Arches National Monument). Utah has some of the most spectacular scenery in the country, and much of it is conserved as national parks and monuments.

One of the two proposed national monuments is the San Rafael Swell (pictured), geologically and geographically similar to Capitol Reef National Park. Capitol Reef’s non-local visitors spent $27,842,000 in 2008, and the federal government spent an additional $1,141,000 on payroll. If the San Rafael Swell becomes a national monument, similar numbers should be expected. Currently, it’s managed by the Bureau of Land Management, has no visitor services, and is used only by off road vehicles and very intrepid hikers.

After all, the Utah state legislature can easily afford to say no to jobs and revenue, right? The latest draft of the state budget cuts education by $21 million, adds a cigarette tax, and cuts the Utah State Hospital’s budget by $500,000.

But what’s mere money when Republicans can stand on principles against a socialist federal guvmint land grab?

I come from a research background, and am appalled at the possible poor research design of this. Also likely is that the results are blown wayyyy out of proportion. 5# a year can be had with walking 30 minutes twice a week. Monkeying with the marketplace over a POTENTIAL 5# weight difference it pathetic. Studies like this almost HAVE to be done on self-report, and that just ain't big news when someone says they eat less pizza 20 years later . . . they left college, the local favorite place closed down and never found another good one, changed over to fish and chips, whatever.

SECOND: What's with some local county dolt saying that taxing food consumption is a VALID MEANS OF MANIPULATING THE MARKET to force people to make different personal food choices?!?!?! How about putting recess and physical education back into scholl cirricula to send a message that excercise and activity is important?? THEN let's look at putting small pizzerias out of business later, if we have todo it at all.

WTF? First it's butter-margarine-butter-margarine-butter-outlaw transfats. Now someone thinks that pizzas is all of a sudden the reason for childhood obesity? You can't make this stuff up.

It's only three days until the first Formula One session of the year, and I'm getting just a little bit excited. There is plenty to look forward to during the 2010 season: new teams, returning champions, a brand new safety car (just me?), all sorts of things.

For only the second time since 1996, Australia won't be hosting the first race. As in 2006, Bahrain gets that honour, which is a shame as Melbourne usually throws up a good race, and I do quite enjoy getting up at early o'clock for F1. It makes it feel special as a season opener.

Anyway, Bahrain. It's been part of the calendar since 2004, and was the first race to be held in the Middle East. The facilities at the track weren't quite finished for the first race, but it went ahead anyway. Up until this year, the layout of the track had remained the same.

The Track

For 2010, an extra half a mile has been added just after turn four, bringing the total length of the circuit to just under four miles. There are a few places to overtake—the slow corners following the long straights tend to provide the best chances.

One of the most difficult things for the drivers and teams to cope with is the heat. The cars have to cope with some pretty high temperatures, with forecasts suggesting air temperature will be around 36 degrees Celsius. It wouldn't be surprising if several cars blew up during the course of the weekend.

History

All of the previous winners of the Bahrain GP will be present, with Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa taking two victories each, and Michael Schumacher and Jenson Button both winning one.

Last years race saw the two Toyota's on the front row of the grid, with Button starting in fourth. Jenson managed to overtake Sebastian Vettel on the first lap, but Lewis Hamilton had taken them both, moving from fifth to third. Button's impressive move on Lewis on the next lap moved him up a place, and once the Toyota's pitted, he was in the lead, and went on to win the race.

Prediction

As it's the first race of the year and I'm doing this before practice or qualifying, this is going to be a complete guess. With it looking like there could be four teams challenging for the title in 2010, that means there are potentially eight drivers who have a realistic chance of the victory here.
